In business, there is no such thing as one size fits all. Each company is different. Corporate and office dynamics are changing constantly. Employee behaviours change. Customer behaviours change. The external factors that influence a business, you guessed it, change. The message behind this is that change is inevitable. And the best way to combat this? Honesty. Always remaining honest and being as transparent as possible is the only way that your customers know that they are getting the best service from you possible.
Most people don’t require bells and whistles – they have a specific need that they want resolving. Don’t waste their time (and yours) by promising them something you know won’t fulfil their needs. This will only give them the impression that you’re more interested in their business rather than helping them. Instead, be honest. Tell them that you do not offer a product or service for that one specific need, but instead direct them to an alternative that may suit them better, and they might end up liking more! This way, you build a trusting relationship with you’re customers and they know that you have their best interest at heart.
The famous line “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!” is a good example to use to show the importance of honesty. To give you a bit of context, this quote was spoken just before it was revealed that the Wizard of Oz was in fact not a god, but just a regular person who used a control panel to give the illusion that he was all-powerful. This is a reminder that no matter what, when you are dishonest, the truth will always come out eventually and this will reflect badly on you. If your customers or employees have already got this fixed picture of you in their head, then they are unlikely to shake this, giving your business a bad name.
We have all been taught to be honest since we were children – and here at Everything Answered, we think there is no reason as to why this shouldn’t be carried forwards into our professional lives too.
